스위스 여행 중 중세 느낌이 가득한 골목길을 걷다가 골목의 분위기와 다르게 현대적인 패션을 한 멋진 여성이 자전거를 끌며 걷고 있었다. 순간 이 장면이 골목의 분위기와 대조를 이룰 것 같아 사진 촬영을 하고 싶었다. 일부러 나를 인지할 때까지 기다렸다가 가볍게 인사했다. 상대도 인사를 받는 것인지 나만의 착각인지 모르겠으나, 안경을 고쳐 섰다. 그 순간 셔터를 눌렀다. 계속 카메라의 파인더에 눈을 데고, 다른 눈으로는 현실을 직시하며 찍은 장면이다. Street Photographer 10년 차의 내공이라고 할까!

Can You Shoot a Fashion Editorial or Lookbook with a Leica M11?
“Fashion editorials involve constant movement. Wouldn’t an autofocus camera from Sony, Nikon, or Canon be the better choice than a manual-focus Leica M11?”
It’s a fair question—and ultimately, the answer comes down to the photographer, not the camera.
If the Leica M11 is the tool that naturally fits your way of seeing, it is more than capable. In fact, for the way I approach fashion editorials, I often believe it offers an advantage.
A strong fashion editorial isn’t just about photographing beautiful clothes or a model. It’s about capturing the atmosphere surrounding them. The environment becomes part of the narrative, transforming a photoshoot into a visual story that reflects the brand’s identity.
Street photography shares that same philosophy. It celebrates honest, unscripted moments rather than manufactured perfection. That is why I often photograph not only the main editorial images, but also behind-the-scenes moments with the Leica M11. Those documentary-style frames frequently become some of the most authentic and memorable images from the entire production.

A Fashion Editorial Through the Eyes of a Street Photographer
This editorial was photographed from the perspective of a street photographer.
Rather than working around a fixed set, we created a storyline and continued moving through different locations, documenting each scene almost like a documentary. The result becomes more than a collection of photographs—it evolves into a complete visual narrative that can naturally be paired with an essay or editorial article.
If your goal is to create content that tells a genuine brand story, this approach is one of the strongest creative choices you can make.
One of the qualities I appreciate most about the Leica M11 is its remarkable color rendering. Primary colors—reds, greens, blues, yellows, and oranges—are reproduced with exceptional clarity and vibrancy, while skin tones remain soft, natural, and elegant.
Combined with Leica’s distinctive lenses, the M11 delivers a timeless rendering that feels perfectly suited for fashion editorials. Calling it an ideal camera for editorial photography would hardly be an exaggeration.
Why a Street Photographer?
Perhaps the best answer is a single photograph.
While traveling through Switzerland, I wandered into a medieval alleyway filled with centuries of history. Suddenly, I noticed a stylish woman walking her bicycle through the narrow street. Her contemporary fashion contrasted beautifully against the historic surroundings.
I knew instantly the scene had potential.
Instead of rushing the shot, I waited until she noticed me. I smiled in greeting. Whether she was acknowledging my greeting or simply adjusting herself, she casually straightened her glasses.
That was the decisive moment.
With one eye in the Leica viewfinder and the other observing the world beyond it, I released the shutter.
Perhaps that’s simply what ten years of street photography teaches you.
That single frame captures exactly why I believe fashion editorials and street photographers are such a natural combination.
